Myofuntional Therapy

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is a program used to correct the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles.  It involves strengthening of the tongue and orofacial muscles by teaching individuals how to engage the muscles to the appropriate position.

Myofunctional disorders are of particular importance in treating speech disorders, because improper tongue function frequently contributes to speech errors.

The goals of myofunctional therapy are to:

  • establish nasal breathing
  • strengthen and tone the muscles of the tongue, lips and face
  • promote the ideal oral resting posture (where the tongue rests in the mouth)
  • establish optimal chewing, swallowing and body posture

Often these skills are required in order to correct articulation disorders. Since becoming a myofunctional therapist, my ability to effectively treat speech sound disorders has greatly improved.
